Working abroad does not mean that you are exempt from paying tax in South Africa.

South Africans who are residents for taxation purposes need to pay tax on worldwide income.

Determining your tax residence is based on two possible scenarios.

1. Are you naturally a resident of South Africa?

2. How many days were you present in SA?

Should you, in terms of either of these tests, be classified as a South African taxpayer, you will be taxed on worldwide income.

Your salary, and any other income you earn in the foreign country you reside in, will be included in your South African tax return.

SARS does however allow certain provisions which will ensure that you are either exempt from paying taxes in South Africa or will at least not be taxed in South Africa as well as the foreign country.

Please forward the relevant details to us so that we can assist you in determining the taxability of your foreign income.
